Why this programme ?
Dredging is a major financial cost for all ports. Moreover if dredging is not done in a proper way, the design depth of the fairway / port infrastructure can not be maintained, limiting the accessibility of the port for deep drafted vessels. In order to control the cost of dredging and allow your port to grow and operate in a sustainable way, it is crucial to understand the different steps of a dredging project. This will allow you to make the right decisions in order to execute dredging projects safely, efficiently and cost-effectively, with attention for the marine ecosystem and its marine biodiversity.
What ?
Dredging plays a crucial role in coastal and port infrastructure projects and guarantees port access and the navigability of waterways. This seminar on Dredging Technologies gives an overview of the different steps of a dredging project, including latest innovations and technology, best practices concerning contract arrangements and project preparation as well as environmental aspects of this topic. Multiple case studies with a focus on Belgium – Europe as well as India – Asia will be given to illustrate the do’s and don’ts of a good dredging project.
The programme consists of 6 modules:
1) Motivation to dredge
– Why do we dredge ?
– What do we dredge ?
– Maintenance versus capital dredging works
2) Dredging types, techniques and equipment
– Functioning and field of application
– Best practices and don’ts
– Trends and innovations
– Case studies
3) Stages of a dredging project
– From idea to execution: challenges and opportunities
– Identification, investigation, feasibility studies, design, construction and maintenance
– Reducing costs and risks in your own projects
4) Types of dredging contracts
– Standard types of dredging contracts
– The key principles of contract preparation
– Minimising the risk of claims
– Calculating volumes to dredge as a basis for payments
– Case studies
5) Site conditions and soil characteristics
– Scope site conditions, soil characteristics and environmental aspects
– Surveying and geotechnical investigations
– Case studies
6) Environmental aspects of dredging
– Environmental impact and corresponding solutions with regard to planning, management, mitigation and monitoring of the project.
– Case studies
